Atelier Docs on your own servers

22 of these tools already never leave your colleagues' browsers. The other 9 currently run on our servers. Self-hosting brings them back onto a machine you administer.

22 tools work in the workstation's browser. The other 9 go as far as your server and come back. Only translation, if you enable it, crosses your network boundary.

22 tools already stay put

Merge, split, rotate, compress, redact, sign, fill in a form: these run in WebAssembly inside the tab of whoever uses them. The document is not uploaded, it is opened. Nothing to install to benefit from that, and nothing to monitor: once the page has loaded they keep working with the network switched off. If your needs stop there, the public site is enough and will never cost you anything.

What installing adds

The nine tools that genuinely need a server: OCR, conversions to and from office formats, HTML to PDF, PDF/A, repairing a damaged file, and translation. Installed on your side, they work on your machine. The deployment is three Docker containers, the web application, the processing engine and a PostgreSQL database, behind the web server of your choice. It is exactly what runs in production here, not a reduced variant.

Who this page is for

Organisations where a written rule forbids a document from leaving the network: law firms, accountancy practices, healthcare providers, HR departments, public bodies. The question there is not whether a supplier can be trusted, but whether you can answer an auditor, a data protection officer or a client in writing about where a file was processed. A public website, however careful, does not let you give that answer.

What you administer

A Linux machine with Docker, a domain name, a certificate. What stays on your side is what touches your network: access, firewall, and off-site backup if you want one. The monitoring probe and the nightly backup that keep the public site running are written and in service here; what gets installed on your side, and by whom, is settled when the quote is drawn up.

Translation still makes an outbound call

Better said before signing than after. Translating calls a language model, and no installation changes that: the document's text goes to the model provider, under your own key and your own contract. The other eight server tools work inside the container and call nothing. Translation can also be left switched off, in which case nothing leaves at all.

Getting started

The licence is annual, and its form depends on your situation rather than on a take-it-or-leave-it price grid. Write describing three things: the reply contains a quote and the steps to follow.

  1. 01The server you have, or the one you intend to use.
  2. 02How many people will use the tools.
  3. 03Which of the 9 server tools you actually need.
