Work on the pages of a PDF

Seven tools for everything to do with the pages themselves: how many, in what order, which way up, how they are framed. None of them touches the text written on the page, and none of them sends your document anywhere: it all happens in this tab.

Extract, remove, split: which one?

All three take pages away, but not in the same way. Extract returns a document made only of the pages you picked. Remove returns the document minus the pages you named: the exact complement. Split loses nothing: it returns several files which, end to end, rebuild the original. Facing a two-hundred-page report where you want chapter 4, use Extract; facing a batch scanned in one pass, use Split.

What pages carry with them

A page is not just artwork: it carries its fonts, its images, its annotations and its links. All of it is copied across untouched, with no re-encoding and so no loss. Two things need more care. The document outline (the bookmarks) does not live in the pages but in the catalogue: it is read and renumbered on every operation, without which a merge would hand back a document with no navigation at all. And internal links that pointed at a page you dropped no longer have a destination.

Cropping hides, it does not erase

This is the costliest confusion in the family. Cropping sets a new page box: whatever falls outside is no longer shown or printed, but it is still written in the file and comes back on a copy-paste. For a scan with over-wide margins that is exactly right. To remove information from a document you are about to send on, you need Redact, which pulls the characters out of the content stream.
